Wat Pho, officially known as Wat Phra Chetuphon, is one of Bangkok’s most famous and culturally significant temples. Located in the historic Rattanakosin district near the Grand Palace, this landmark is best known for housing the 46-metre-long gold-covered Reclining Buddha — one of the largest Buddha statues in Thailand.
But Wat Pho is more than just a temple. It is widely recognised as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage and home to the renowned Wat Pho Thai Traditional Massage School. The school preserves centuries-old healing knowledge and offers professional training courses as well as authentic Thai massage treatments for visitors. Many of Thailand’s certified massage therapists trace their training back to Wat Pho’s traditional techniques.
Throughout the temple complex, visitors can explore beautifully decorated ordination halls, intricately tiled chedis, peaceful courtyards, and over 1,000 Buddha images. Stone inscriptions around the grounds document Thai medicine, yoga postures, and traditional knowledge, earning UNESCO recognition under the Memory of the World Programme.
Whether you’re interested in Thai history, architecture, spirituality, photography, or wellness, Wat Pho offers a rich cultural experience in the heart of Bangkok.
