Description
Bangkok’s annual Vegetarian Festival returns to Yaowarat, bringing nine days of vegetarian food, religious traditions and Thai-Chinese culture to Chinatown.
Known in Thailand as Tesagan Gin Je, the festival is observed as a period of purification and merit-making within the Thai-Chinese community. Throughout the festival, restaurants, street-food vendors and shops display distinctive yellow flags marked with the red Chinese character เจ to indicate food prepared according to the festival’s vegetarian traditions.
Yaowarat is one of Bangkok’s most popular areas to experience the festival. Visitors can explore a wide selection of Jay dishes, from noodles, dumplings and tofu to vegetable dishes, desserts and vegetarian versions of familiar Thai and Chinese foods.
Beyond the food, the festival has strong religious and cultural roots connected to the Nine Emperor Gods. Chinese temples and shrines around Chinatown become important centres of activity as local communities participate in worship, ceremonies and merit-making traditions.
